Gay-rights group to publicize signers
Quote:
A new gay-rights group called Know Thy Neighbor announced plans Tuesday to publicize the name of everyone who signs referendum petitions to overturn two gay-rights bills passed by the Legislature this year.
A coalition of conservative Christians is circulating petitions to put the two measures before voters in the November 2008 election.
It may be new to Oregon, but Know Thy Neighbor is something that both Massachusetts and Florida have been acquainted with in the past (if memory serves). |

But exactly what does knowing who signed the petitions accomplish? I would think that any rabid homophobe would be more than happy to have his name publicized as such. |

You would think. Still, the threats of lawsuits are abundant.
Such petitions are generally public information, available to anyone who asks for them for the costs of photocopying the documents. Far from being illegal, a private concern posting such information on a web site actually saves the state much trouble. After all, why would I bother some clerk to photocopy page after page of a referendum petition when I can just look for the information online? I am surprised that the state does not save the paper by producing such sites themselves. |

Perhaps these hypoChristians are leery of being called bigots... |

And just general bitching about how they feel so "intimidated"... |

How absurd.
Public acts in the public sphere are.... oh, I don't know.... public.
If you cannot do a thing in public for fear of being "intimidated" by the "threat" of being seen to do so, then perhaps you should reconsider your actions. Or better yet, grow a spine. |

Oh my...we have a new breed...the closet homophobe. Credit me for this addition to the English vernacular. |
