Controversial video to be reviewed
Quote:
The video, "That's a Family! a film for kids about family and diversity" has created controversy since it was shown to some third graders at Van Zant School in late December. It depicts various types of families, including those with same-sex, bi-racial, single and divorced parents and adopted children.
Its distributor, Women's Educational Media, claims the film is intended to help K-8 children "understand the different shapes families take today."
After the parent of a third grader complained to media outlets about the district's decision to show the video and its content, the situation quickly grew to garner regional and national attention.
The district held a meeting to screen the video for parents and sent a survey home to get a feel for opinion. About 50 percent of those who responded to the survey said they wanted their children excused from watching the video.
Some parents have argued that the subject matter is not age-appropriate, while others have argued that it is not the school district's role to teach moral or family values.
This goes along with those 43% wo would not vote for a gay presidential candidate. They most assuredly want their children to grow up to bigoted, intolerant assholes. But what did we expect? Every culture strives to preserve its unique values, whatever they are. |
