If memory serves... he declined to answer the question at all, and so lost the Wheaties deal.

Louganis counts as half out in 1988. Recall that he was thought too femmy for the Wheaties box, and lost other deals because it was an open secret that he was gay.

Small, indeed... and the egg company is also what you might call "small."

A check of the ever-popular Wiki claims that Mr. Louganis came out in 1994, so I shall withdraw my suggestion. Mr. Louganis' endorsement would have been as an athlete, not a gay athlete.

Well, if you're going to be picky, Martina, mannish as she is, nonetheless is not a gay man. Razz

HeadBlade says that its deal with Amaechi marks "the first time a mainstream company has sponsored an openly gay male athlete"

Martina Navratilova -- Subaru
Esera Tuaolo -- Chili's

I'd add Greg Louganis, but I can't find the years he did the egg commercials.

In any event, it's my understanding that Mr. Amaechi is retired, so isn't quite an "athlete," but more of a "former-athlete." I'd further question the idea that specialty razors for shaving bald heads are "mainstream." Mind you, I'm a likely buyer of HeadBlade's product... but my brother is not. Neither are my co-workers or even one of my neighbors in a block in any direction. To me, that's a "niche market."

But good on HeadBlade for picking him up.
