Young Man Attacked and Dragged From Car Over Labor Day Weekend
Quote:
Andrew Geske, 26, was walking home from the Capitol Hill gay bar Pony early Monday morning when, according to a police report and Geske’s own recounting of events for The Stranger, he was attacked by a young man driving a black BMW and then dragged down Broadway as the car sped away and a passenger held onto Geske’s arms.
...
According to the Seattle Police report, the attack is being investigated as a bias crime.
Geske, a barback at a nearby bar and a personal trainer, suffered sprained fingers and scrapes on his back, elbows, and knee, but is otherwise unharmed. “It was a gay bashing,” Geske told The Stranger. “Word needs to get out that gays are still being targeted. Call me naive, but I didn’t think this could happen here.”
Call me cynical, but name a place where this doesn't happen?
And yes... word needs to get out that Gays are still being targeted. |

In Cologne, the Gay capital of Germany, a group of 7 or 8 thugs (all schoolboys) made a regular visit to the city's largest cruising area, for the purpose of beating up Gay men. This was quite a shock for many weel-suited gentlemen who otherwise view the world through pink glasses. One must know that the said cruising area (a park) is inmidst of the city and normally a very safe place. This went o for a couple of months, with the police knowing who the criminals are, but unable to collect enough evidence for a process. How many isolated crimes are commited against less wealthy suburb Gays can't be determined, since the incidents usually go unreported. |

My first reaction to stories like this (and there is no lack of stories like this -- you can pry a few dozen out of any old queen at any old gay bar for the price of the beer it takes to tell them) is "how dare they be shocked?"
They are, you know... shocked; always surprised that this phenomenon should come to their attention here (wherever 'here' is).
Visibility is a moral requirement for Gays. We must be as completely visible as our individual circumstances allow. Attacks of this kind simply must be reported... if not to the civil authorities (who, in quite a lot of places, will do nothing whatsoever of a useful nature), then at least to the local Gay community. It is true that they will, quite likely, do very little of a useful nature as well, though it would be a lie to say that there is nothing that they can do.
At the very least, crimes against the Gay people may not be allowed to be invisible. |
