Lake Natoma beating victim dies

Quote:
Satendar Singh, the 26-year-old man who was in critical condition this week after being punched at Lake Natoma on Sunday, died late this afternoon after family members agreed to end his life support.

Singh had been at Mercy San Juan Medical Center since his condition began worsening Sunday night following an altercation that his friends believe was a hate crime.

On Sunday, Singh was picnicking with friends of Fijian and Indian descent at a picnic area near Lake Natoma. According to friends of Singh's who were there, a group of Russian-speaking men and women hassled them throughout the day. That evening, about six men from the Slavic group picked a fight, Singh's friends said. Singh was struck once, fell and hit his head. No one else was injured.

Before the attack, the assailants had directed homophobic slurs at Singh and racial insults at the group, according to the friends.

Despite the homophobic slurs directed at Mr. Singh, there are no indications that he was Gay.

A victim nonetheless.

Correction -- none in the Sacremento Bee.

Quote:
The Sacramento Bee reported that the man's friends told reporters he is not gay, but family members discussing the murder with Being Gay Today's Nathan Feldman, said they knew of Satendar Singh's sexual orientation, and that it had never interfered with their deep love for him. Singh was a recent immigrant to America, having won a lottery for a green card, earning him the nickname "The Lucky One" among his family and friends.

One arrested, one sought in death of Fijian immigrant

Quote:
Sheriff's deputies have arrested one man and are searching for a second in the death of a 26-year-old Fijian immigrant that authorities have labeled a hate crime.

Aleksandr Shevchenko, 22, of Sacramento was arrested at his home on Monday on suspicion of intimidating and interfering with a victim's rights.

The sheriff's department said a second man, Andrey Vusik, 29, of West Sacramento had fled to Russia. They said they were working with the FBI to find him and extradite him to face charges of involuntary manslaughter and intimidating and interfering with a victim's rights.
