Heard on CBC Radio last night that a settlement has finally been reached between the Roman Catholic church and the victims of Father Charles Sylvestre, a priest who sexually molested dozens and dozens of little girls for over 30 years, from the 1950s into at least the 1970s. Documents showed that the church was well aware of Sylvestre's abuses, but no actions had been taken to halt his depraved behaviour.
For his decades of child rape and abuse, Sylvestre received only a three-year sentence, but died in prison. For its decades of complicity and cover-ups, the Roman Catholic church said "sorry", and eventually paid out some cash. According to the report on CBC Radio, lawyers on both sides declined to reveal how much money was involved in the settlement, but the report said it was easily one of the largest abuse settlements in Roman Catholic history (within Canada).
Despite looking, I have been unable to find any links on this latest development in the story -- just the verbal report on CBC Radio.
I have also been unable to find any attempts by the Vatican to use this shameful case as a justification to hound all the heterosexual priests out of the clergy. |
