Novelist Terry McMillan is suing Jonathan Plummer for $40,000 over claims that he attempted to smear her reputation during their divorce. McMillan's lawsuit claims that her Plummer and his lawyer, Dolores Sargent: "conspired and formed a plan to threaten, humiliate and embarrass Terry McMillan."
The pair are also accused of plotting to "violate her privacy, place her in harm's way, and damage her professional and personal standing in an attempt to extort monies from her." according to 365Gay.com.
Neither Plummer or Sargent have been willing to comment on the case.
McMillan and Plummer married in Maui in September 1998. Plummer, who was significantly younger that the McMillan, was the inspiration for McMillan's best-selling novel How Stella Got Her Groove Back, in which the main character falls for a much younger man.
The book was also made into a 1998 film starring Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs. The couple divorced when Plummer revealed to McMillan that he is gay.

The divorce was settled for an undisclosed amount, but not before Plummer accused McMillan of harassing him with a series of letters.
According to TheSmokingGun.com, Plummer told the court that one of these letters read:
"I do hate you Jonathan. I hate all the Fags out there like you who use women to hide behind so that you can walk the streets of America without a care in the world... you're a Fag alright."
What, she felt "humiliated and embarrassed" and thought her reputation might be damaged because her letters -- which she has not denied writing -- make her look like a bigot? Well.... good. |
