Mar 02, 2007 News: UC Berkeley Students Organize Gay Fraternity
By vanrozenheim

(Berkeley, USA) - Sigma Epsilon Omega (SEO), UC Berkeley’s only gay fraternity, will be officially launching its first meeting and rush event, Tuesday, Feb. 27th, 2007 at 7pm in Barrows Hall, Room 190. This event will serve as an informational meeting for potential members and the Berkeley community. The remainder of the week will include rush events for potential members including interviews, a Social Night, and an Invite Only Event.

Sigma Epsilon Omega offers gay Cal undergraduate and graduate students all the social benefits and fun of a typical fraternity with a professional and political edge. Sigma Epsilon Omega’s schedule will include a vast array of events including voluntary library and gym group sessions, political events, business events, and of course a wide variety of social functions from dances to attending sports events. As a fraternity, Sigma Epsilon Omega is hoping to appeal not only to existing active members of the Berkeley gay community, but also to members of the gay community that have not yet found an organization that has aligned with their common interests or goals.

For sustainability, Sigma Epsilon Omega is working on partnering up with UC Berkeley Alumni, as well as other members of the gay community, to help fund the organization, create networking opportunities, and establish a long-term strategy.

“SEO is going to be a very unique gay organization. We are hoping to bring together a group of brothers that are dedicated, driven, and are willing to sacrifice for the betterment of the overall community, while still being able to have fun and enjoy campus life,” explains President and Founder, Travis Garcia. “I think organizing as a fraternity will give us the unity and discipline necessary to succeed as an organization. We will definitely not be a group that stays in the background of the gay rights movement. Someone better let Bill O’Reilly and the rest of the Conservative Media know, ready or not, we will be coming for them because the real debate over what is moral and right for this country has just begun.”
