Jan 18, 2007News: Latvia Gay Group Hold First General Assembly and Sets Itself Challenging Targets

RIGA, January 18, 2006 – Latvian partnership law, Riga Gay Pride and strengthening of the LGBT community are the three main – and challenging – priorities that were set at the first General Assembly of Mozaika, the Latvian alliance of LGBT people and their friends, which was held last week. The meeting also set-up five working groups: legal, cultural, IT, sport & youth issues, and organising Riga Pride/Friendship Days 2007 which will be one of the main events by and for LGBT community in Latvia.
Mozaika believes this event is an important instrument to raise awareness and consequent understanding of LGBT issues.
Participants at the Mozaika Assembly were enthusiastic about the news that the organisers of Pride London had offered a “twinning” arrangement between Riga and London.
In the coming weeks, representatives from Pride London will be visiting Riga to discuss the specifics of this partnership.
The Assembly was also told that a number of Members of the European Parliament, politicians from European Union member states, as well as representatives from national LGBT organisations had expressed their determination to take parting this year’s Riga Pride /Friendship Days.
A new board of seven people was elected – the largest-ever board. Kristine Garina, previously acting chair, was formally elected chair of the Mozaika board.
Participants at the meeting expressed their satisfaction with the past work of Mozaika and expressed their hope the work aiming to improve the human rights situation for LGBT people would continue in 2007.
The Assembly was also attended by representatives from other NGOs that had worked with Mozaika.
