(Kingston, Jamaica) - A gay man identified as Wayne Pinnock was found brutally murdered in an appartment in Kingston. The naked body of Mr. Pinnock was discovered in a bedroom with eight stab wounds and his throat cut. Police said that they believe the victim was killed last Thursday.
According to the reports, police officers were summoned to the area on Thursday after they were called by residents who said that they had heard cries of 'help' and 'murder' coming from the direction of Pinnock's home. However, the police tald they did not find the body on Thursday because they were not sure where to look.
The obvious incapability of local police is accompanied with their unwillingness to investigate the case properly - instead, the police is reportedly believing that Mr. Pinnock was killed "by his male lover".
The local Jamaican newspapers reported the case in a utterly homophobic way, suggesting that Mr. Pinnock was killed by his male lover. The outrageous report on "The Jamaica Observer" contains, among other, the following statement:
"Despite claims by local and international gay rights groups that homosexuals are targeted and killed in Jamaica, police statistics have shown that most murders involving gay men are carried out by other gay men."
The article further claims that the man convicted of the brutal murder of J-FLAG activist Brian Williamson, had admitted to be his male lover, an outrageous derision of the victim of a homophobic hate crime.
Homophobia is a socially accepted in Jamaica and is sometimes reported to be an "integrate part of the Jamaican culture". Jamaican rap singers such as Buju Banton openly incited to murder of gay men.
On March 20 2006, the former trade ambassador Peter King was found dead at similar circumstances. The police reportedly has found various videotapes with naked young men. No one was charged with the murder.
