Jun 13, 2007 News: Anglican Archbishop in Uganda Wages War Against Gays and Lesbians
By vanrozenheim

(Uganda) - Archbishop Henry Orombi, the head of the Anglican Church in Uganda, started a new assault on gay people. While addressing Christians of Ndeeba Archdeaconry in Kayunga district on Saturday, he told the auditory: "Acts of homosexuality and lesbianism have infiltrated our schools, especially secondary schools." He continued then: "I have personally joined the war against the vice and I want you to join me". The bishop did not specify how the regular citizens might contribute to his fight against homosexuals, but obviously these contributions vill entail no good to the gay people.

The Bishop targeted the school officials who in his view have not done enough to fight homosexuality, accusing the school heads of being only concerned with growing enrolment numbers of students without minding the "discipline of the children".

The homophobic bishop further continued explaning his stand that the Church of Uganda will not restore links with churches in the USA that do not share his views on gay people. "We shall not associate with them even if it means losing aid. We rather remain poor than accept aid which will in the end lead to moral decay of society," he said.

Playing the nationalism card, Bishop Orombi continued by claiming that dependence on donations was undermining the country's independence. In Uganda, the government currently promotes “virginity parades” and restricts the availability of condoms to youth. According to the Human Rights Watch, these misguided measurements let the desease spread dramatically in the country formerly known for its successes in battling the AIDS epidemy.

The Bishop also urged parents to "instill morals and discipline" in their children, apparantly in substitution of the classical chistian values such as compassion and love. Violent assaults against gay men and women are very common in Uganda, with parents and other family members being among the the persecutors.
